About Compensation and Classification
The mission of the Compensation and Classification Department is to ensure competitive and equitable compensation and classification practices, in partnership with the University community, to attract, motivate, and retain talented employees.
The department consults with colleges and units to determine the University’s compensation needs. We provide training and expertise in these areas:
- Market data on compensation: Researching, maintaining, and reporting on external market data
- Classification systems: Developing and managing classification systems, including completing classifications on new or modified positions
- Reward and recognition programs: Designing and reviewing reward programs (incentive, merit, and bonus programs) and providing technical advice on recognition programs
- Policy and guidance on pay practices
- Providing guidance on compensation policies regarding federal, state, and local laws and regulations, as well as university policies. These policies include equity laws and the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), which regulates overtime pay.
- Researching, designing, and implementing wage and salary plans and other pay delivery programs
The University's compensation philosophy is outlined in its Compensation Policies. The University’s compensation and recognition systems are guided by these principles:
- Create a compensation structure that is competitive and that attracts and retains a high-performance workforce.
- Reward exceptional performance and employee contributions through compensation and other forms of recognition.
- In setting salaries and salary adjustments, consider:
- Performance
- Internal equity
- Experience and expertise
- Follow fair and equitable compensation and recognition practices.
