If you're planning to take Minnesota Paid Leave, a little preparation can go a long way. These tips can help prevent delays and make the review process as smooth as possible.
Before you apply
Plan your leave
Before your leave begins, talk with your supervisor about your plan and review the University's leave planning guidance.
Complete your certification paperwork
Most leaves require certification from a healthcare provider or other supporting documentation. Make sure you have all your required documentation in order to avoid delays.
It could also be helpful to double-check that all required forms are accurate and signed.
Learn more about required documents on the MN Paid Leave webpage.
Review your application carefully
Prevent unnecessary delays by reviewing your application before submitting. When you're ready to apply:
- Make sure youāre able to log in to the MetLife portal.
- Enter your approximate leave dates and MetLife can update them if they change.
- Double-check the information in your application matches your certification documentation.
- Confirm that you've answered all required questions before submitting.
A complete and accurate application helps avoid unnecessary follow-up requests.
What can cause processing delays?
Applications are reviewed individually to help protect against fraud and ensure accurate payments. Some require additional steps before they can be approved. The most common reasons include:
- Identity verification or fraud protection checks
- Missing or incomplete information
- Differences between your application and supporting documentation
- Additional information needed from you, the University, or your healthcare provider
What to expect after you apply
You can submit your application up to 60 days before your leave begins. However, MetLife will not begin processing it until the first day you are absent from work.
This timing is a standard part of the review process and does not mean there is a problem with your application. Plan to begin your leave on your scheduled start date, even if your application is still under review.
You can use this time to collect any required documentation that you still need. MetLife might provide forms for you to bring to your provider to complete before your leave begins.
