When and How to Make Changes to Your Benefits

Did you know you can make changes to some of your benefits outside of Open Enrollment? While Open Enrollment is when most people make benefits changes, it’s not the only chance you have. Some you can make at any time, while others you can make after a qualifying life event. Read on to discover how and when you can update your University benefits.

Customize Certain Benefits at Any Time

Some benefits can be added or updated throughout the year. You don’t have to wait for a qualifying life event or Open Enrollment. These are:

Adjust Some Benefits After a Life Event

Within 30 days of a qualifying life event, you can make changes to some of your benefits. Be sure to provide the required documents. Depending on your life event, that might include changes to:

  • Medical coverage
  • Dental coverage
  • Health care FSA
  • Dependent care FSA
  • Life insurance

Visit the Life Events web page to see a complete list of events, changes you can make, required documents, and how to submit your changes in MyU.

Choose Your Complete Benefits Annually

Your biggest opportunity to select or change your benefits is either:

  1. During the annual Open Enrollment period, or
  2. Within your first 30 days of employment or new eligibility.

Open Enrollment is your chance to review all of your options and decide what coverage you’d like for the next year. You can choose to:

  • Enroll in or change medical plans
  • Enroll in or change dental plans
  • Enroll in a flexible spending account (FSA)
  • Enroll in or cancel existing child life insurance coverage
  • Decrease or cancel your employee or spouse life insurance coverage*
  • Increase short-term disability by $100 or $200 or cancel your existing coverage**
  • Begin, decrease, increase, or cancel long-term disability insurance coverage. This is only if you are a Civil Service or Labor-Represented employee or Faculty and P&A working 50-67% time.

*If you want to enroll or increase the amount of additional coverage, this is not part of Open Enrollment. See the information above.

**If you do not currently have coverage and want to enroll, or add more than $200 to existing coverage, this is not part of Open Enrollment. See the information above.
