Boynton Health is seeking a strong, accomplished clinical medical leader to serve as the executive medical director. This leader will champion student and patient-centered responsive healthcare through a team-based approach. This position will provide strategic direction and oversight for clinical services and collaborate with other leaders to foster, promote, and engage in health and wellness activities at Boynton and across the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. Boynton Health is one of the largest and most comprehensive student health centers in the nation. With a legacy spanning over a century, the center is named in honor of its founding physician, Dr. Ruth Boynton. Today, Boynton Health provides care to 28,000 students and University staff through more than 85,000 visits annually. The clinic offers a wide array of services including urgent and preventive primary care, therapy and psychiatry, an eye clinic, a full-service pharmacy, physical therapy, nutritional counseling, and public health infectious disease management. Responsibilities
This role is structured into two core areas of focus:
- Executive leadership (65%)
- Direct patient care in urgent and primary care (35%)
This position supervises the clinical directors of primary care, psychiatry, optometry, allied health, and pharmacy. The executive medical director serves as a dyad with the executive director and reports directly to the executive vice president of health affairs.
Executive Leadership (65%)
Clinical Care Oversight and Supervision
- Oversee the development, review, and implementation of clinical guidelines, protocols, and evidence-based practice approaches.
- Direct the review and resolution of clinical concerns, patient grievances, medical errors, and infection prevention reports.
- Work closely with interdisciplinary teams to optimize patient care and improve workflow dynamics.
- Sponsor and champion upgrades to the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and other technology systems to drive clinic efficiency.
- Cultivate collaborative relationships with local hospitals and external healthcare providers to streamline referral pathways, discharge planning, and continuity of care.
- Provide authoritative clinical consultation and expertise as needed during infectious disease outbreaks or campus-wide medical crises.
- Direct provider and staff supervision in alignment with the UMN’s performance management philosophy. Provide annual work plans, track metrics, conduct reviews, and deliver timely coaching and feedback to medical providers.
Campus Public Health Response
- Design and execute clinical programs and services in coordination with the executive director to support the personal and public health needs of the University community.
- Lead clinical efforts and emergency preparedness in response to public health emergencies, infectious diseases, natural disasters, or student medical crises with the executive director. Actively liaise with local and state health agencies, the Office of Health Affairs, the Office for Student Affairs, and the Health Emergency Response Office (HERO), serving in Boynton's Incident Command Structure during emergencies.
Quality and Safety Improvement
- Oversee, monitor, and meet defined clinical quality and safety metrics in partnership with the executive director.
- Initiate, champion, and sponsor annual clinical quality improvement projects.
- Actively participate in and lead committees dedicated to identifying and resolving patient and staff safety issues.
- Maintain readiness for the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) by leading and supporting workflow updates that align with accreditation standards.
- Oversee clinical quality reviews and provider peer review processes, delegating a clinical leader to head the peer review committee.
- Model and enforce a strict commitment to patient privacy in compliance with state, federal (FERPA/HIPAA), and University regulations.
Practice Leadership
- Attend and provide visible clinical leadership at service line and provider meetings.
- Guide and actively participate in clinical quality or interdisciplinary consultation meetings.
- Monitor and mentor providers in areas of responsibility, focusing on clinical performance, professional staff interactions, documentation standards, and collaborative behavior.
- Facilitate leadership and continuing professional development opportunities for clinical leaders and medical staff.
- Serve as the final authority on clinical policies, protocols, and guidelines governing practitioners (including physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners). Ensure clinical directors under supervision develop, review, and revise policies to govern their respective practices.
- Partner with human resources to define clinical qualifications and competencies, leading the recruitment, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding of new providers and clinical directors.
Engagement and Communication
- Establish and maintain positive, respectful, and collaborative relationships with patients, staff, and the executive team.
- Clearly communicate organizational goals, operational initiatives, and updates to clinical staff.
- Disseminate relevant clinical policy updates, guidelines, and procedural changes.
- Facilitate healthy interdisciplinary communication and actively manage conflict resolution.
- Respond to clinical concerns and feedback from campus stakeholders, including participating in Student Health Advisory Committee meetings.
Direct Patient Care in Urgent and Primary Care (35%)
The executive medical director maintains an active clinical practice. Privileges are granted annually according to Minnesota state law and include, but are not limited to:
- Taking patient histories and performing detailed physical examinations, including well-visits and preventive evaluations.
- Ordering, interpreting, and evaluating diagnostic data and laboratory tests.
- Performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within approved clinical privileges (e.g., biopsy, minor surgery, wound care).
- Prescribing, administering, and dispensing prescription and nonprescription medications and medical devices.
- Diagnosing and treating acute illnesses, infectious diseases, minor trauma, and chronic conditions or diseases.
- Issuing patient referrals to internal and external providers to facilitate treatment plans, including care coordination for severe mental illness.
- Providing contraceptive services, including emergency contraception.
- Educating patients on health promotion, disease prevention, current treatment options, and compliance, while addressing patient questions.
- Reviewing test results with patients via appointments, telephone consults, letters, or secure messages.
- Consulting with other physicians and healthcare professionals to confirm complex diagnoses and coordinate care plans.
- Mentoring and supervising the clinical work of nursing staff, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and clinical learners.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- MD or DO degree
- Unrestricted licensure (or immediate eligibility) by the State of Minnesota to practice medicine
- ABMS board certification in your medical specialty
- Active DEA certification
- Minimum of five (5) years of senior clinical management, leadership, and supervisory experience in an outpatient primary care group practice, community health clinic, and/or college student healthcare setting
- Demonstrated track record of building, nurturing, and leading high-performing clinical teams
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to handle difficult conversations and deliver clear objectives
- Deep proficiency in healthcare operations, clinic financial aspects, change management, and personnel management
- Comprehensive understanding of healthcare laws, regulations, and compliance standards
- Proven commitment to serving all patients and a thorough understanding of how social and economic determinants of health impact diverse campus communities

Salary, Benefits, and Other Details
Starting salary range: $265,000–325,000 (depending on education/qualifications/experience)
