University Holiday Calendars

The University of Minnesota observes 12 holidays each fiscal year. Floating holidays depend on collective bargaining agreements and may change. The holidays vary by campus in accordance with the Administrative Policy: Academic Calendars.

Religious Holidays

In addition to the observed University holidays below, the University provides employees with time away from work to observe religious holidays. Refer to the Employee Absences for Religious Holidays Administrative Policy and your employee group governance document for details.

Faculty and staff are also encouraged to consult the Office for Equity and Diversity's Calendar of Holidays and Religious Observances before scheduling events or exams. This list is not exhaustive and observances are not necessarily days when individuals will not attend work, but it is encouraged to be flexible with colleagues who may need to shift their workload or schedules, or require accommodations.

Personal and Scheduled Floating Holidays

Personal Holiday—Twin Cities and Rochester Campuses

Academic, civil service, and non-faculty labor-represented employees on the Rochester and Twin Cities campuses have a personal holiday instead of a scheduled floating holiday.

Eligibility

Civil service and labor-represented staff are eligible for a personal holiday.

Academic employees (faculty; P&A; and professionals in training except 9541, 9548, 9549, 9554, 9555, 9556, and 9559) who follow the Rochester and Twin Cities academic calendar and who are eligible to receive holiday pay are also eligible for a personal holiday.

Guidelines for Using Your Personal Holiday

  1. Your personal holiday must be taken during the fiscal year (July 1–June 30) or it will be lost. It cannot be carried over to the next fiscal year.
  2. Talk with your supervisor before you use your holiday and follow the same procedure as requesting vacation.
  3. Your personal holiday must be taken in whole day increments.
  4. If you leave the University (voluntarily or involuntarily) before you use your personal holiday, you will not be paid for this time.

Rules and contract language governing leave for personal holidays vary by employee group. Be sure to consult the appropriate governing document.

Scheduled Floating Holiday—Crookston, Duluth, and Morris Campuses

Academic, civil service, and non-faculty labor-represented employees in Crookston, Duluth, and Morris usually have a scheduled floating holiday instead of a personal holiday. The entire campus is closed on the scheduled date. Check your campus holiday schedule found earlier on this page to confirm the scheduled floating holiday observed on your campus.

For contract language regarding leaves of absence for Crookston and Duluth faculty, refer to the Unit 9 University Education Association Contract.
