About the Employee Wellbeing Program

The Wellbeing Program offers resources and programming that allow you to earn points toward a discount on your University medical insurance. If you’re not covered by University medical insurance, you can still use the program to support your wellbeing.

The mission of the Wellbeing Program is to offer wellbeing programs and resources that support and empower University of Minnesota employees and their families to be the best version of themselves. Our approach is rooted in six interconnected dimensions of wellbeing that research shows positively influence overall health and life satisfaction. Together, these dimensions provide a holistic framework to help you thrive in every area of your life.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do I have to earn my points by?

Each program year runs September 1–August 31. August 31 is the day you need to meet your points goal to get a discount on your University medical insurance for the next calendar year.

How do I know if I have enough Wellbeing Points to earn a discount on medical insurance? When and how will I receive the discount?

You’ll know you have enough points for the program year once your bar makes it to your points goal of 8,000 or 10,500 points on the Wellbeing Program platform.

If you earned the points, you’ll start seeing reduced Wellbeing Rates on your first full paycheck of the next January. You’ll find your rate under Before-Tax Deductions on the left side of your paycheck:

Before-Tax Deductions - Medical UM rates will display under "Current"

You can check the rates on the Medica Plan Options page. If you are not receiving the rates and believe you should be, please contact [email protected] by June 30 of the calendar year following the program year.

Does my spouse need to participate in order to receive the discount?

No, your spouse does not need to participate. Your spouse can participate and earn a minimum of 2,500 points toward your 10,500-point goal, or you can earn all 10,500 points yourself. (Your spouse can still use resources if they don’t earn 2,500 points, but their points won’t count toward your goal.)

Note that your spouse must be covered under your medical insurance to participate. If your spouse is not covered, then you only need to earn 8,000 points.

Can I earn points toward a discount even if I don’t have medical insurance through the University?

You can still earn points toward a discount on the University medical plan rates even if you’re not currently enrolled in a University medical plan. (You do need to be eligible to enroll with at least a 75% appointment, though.) For example, if you earn your points goal by August 31, 2026, and enroll in a medical plan during open enrollment, you will receive the Wellbeing Rates in 2027. If you add a spouse to your University medical plan, you will still receive the Wellbeing Rates.
