CIR-SEIU Contract Negotiation

Due to scheduling conflicts, the University of Minnesota and the Committee of Interns and Residents, a local of Service Employees International Union (CIR-SEIU) bargaining teams held their 17th bargaining session in this negotiation cycle through an electronic exchange of proposals on May 19, in lieu of the regularly scheduled virtual session.

This alternative approach ensured continuity in the bargaining process and allowed the parties to keep negotiations moving forward. Through this exchange, the parties reached a tentative agreement on the Release of Bargaining Unit Information article.

To date, the parties have reached tentative agreements on the following full articles:

The parties will meet every other week for the foreseeable future, with the next bargaining session scheduled for June 2, 2026. 

The University of Minnesota and the Committee of Interns and Residents, a local of Service Employees International Union (CIR-SEIU), met on May 5, for the 16th session in this negotiation cycle.  

During the sessions, parties reached agreements on Duration (exact dates to be added upon completion of bargaining) and Union Activity articles.

Negotiations will continue on a bi-weekly basis. To ensure continuous progress, the University and the Union will exchange proposals via email on May 19 in lieu of a formal meeting. The parties will return to the table on June 2, 2026.

The University of Minnesota and the Committee of Interns and Residents, a local of Service Employees International Union (CIR-SEIU), met on December 16, 2025, for the seventh session in this negotiation cycle.

The University of Minnesota and the Committee of Interns and Residents, a local of Service Employees International Union (CIR-SEIU), met on December 2, 2025, for the sixth session in this negotiation cycle.

The parties will meet every other week for the foreseeable future with the next bargaining session scheduled for December 16, 2025.  

The University of Minnesota and the Committee of Interns and Residents, a local of Service Employees International Union (CIR-SEIU), met on November 18, 2025, for the fifth session in this negotiation cycle.

The parties will meet every other week for the foreseeable future with the next bargaining session scheduled for December 2, 2025.  

The University and CIR-SEIU held an opening bargaining session on September 17. The parties exchanged initial non-economic proposals. Two articles: (a) Agreement, and (b) Posting of Agreement reached tentative agreement. The next bargaining session is October 7.

The University and CIR-SEIU will begin bargaining on September 17. 

After the initial session, both parties have agreed to hold a virtual bargaining session on the first Tuesday of each month in the evening.

On March 24, 2025, the State of Minnesota, Bureau of Mediation Services, received a petition filed by the Committee of Interns and Residents, Long Island City, New York. With majority support confirmed through valid authorization cards, the Bureau of Mediation Services (BMS) certified the union as the exclusive representative on May 9, 2025.

Next Steps

Negotiations will begin once scheduling is arranged between the University and the Union. Once confirmed, negotiation session dates will be posted on this page.
