For All Employees
Below are general steps to take if you decide to no longer work for the University:
- Notify your supervisor about your plan to leave the University. You can send an email, talk with them, or send a letter. You must include the last day you plan to work in writing to your supervisor.
- Get ready for your last day of work by:
- Upload any projects or files not currently stored in your department’s file area or transfer ownership of items in your Google Drive.
- Partner with your supervisor on an offboarding plan to help transition work.
- If you have a purchasing card or P-Card, you need to call the customer service number on the back of the card.
- Visit the Office of Information Technology’s Leaving the University guide for information on how long you’ll have access to email, MyU, and other University technology.
- On your last day:
- Return all IT equipment and University-owned equipment.
- Update the voicemail password on your work phone to the last five digits of your work phone number.
- Update your voicemail and email with an automatic reply stating you are no longer at the University and who should be contacted in your absence.
- Update your personal information in MyU. This will allow mail such as W-2 forms to reach you. You may also want to print copies of previous pay statements or W-2s before you lose access to MyU (as outlined above).
- Cancel your parking contract. Your parking contract does not automatically stop. You will be billed until you contact Parking and Transportation Services to cancel your contract.
Departure and your benefits
When you leave your job with the University, your benefits will end. In most cases, you have the option to continue medical, dental, life insurance, and EAP coverage at your own cost. For more information, Contact OHR Employee Benefits or your HR contact to discuss benefits upon termination. Additional benefit information can be found on the Benefits, Leaving the U of M resource.
