Key Priorities for the Year Ahead

Overview of tracks and sessions

Attendees will have the option to attend one of three speaker presentations for each session, which are customized into three tracks:

  • Individual contributor
  • Leaders and managers
  • Organizational development

Please feel free to either stick with one track or mix and match in whatever way best meets your interests and needs. In addition, attendees can engage in one of the three strategic planning work sessions where you'll be invited to share your input for a new HR strategic plan for the University.

Note: If you choose to attend an HR strategic planning session, there's no need to attend all three sessions. Each strategic planning session will be the same.

Session one: 11:00 a.m. to noon

TrackTopicRoomDescription
Track 1: Individual Contributors

What Does the HR Competency Model Mean for Me as an HR Practitioner?

Video

M Club Room - 1st FloorThis session will provide an overview of HR career paths from a competency perspective. Attendees will learn how to use competencies to maximize performance and development in their current role and to increase readiness for future career transitions, with a focus on transferable and critical skills for career progression versus technical skills that may become outdated or are not relevant beyond the current role.
Track 2: Leaders and ManagersLeading the Next Generation: Changing Expectations of Employees of their Employers Club Cambria Room - 3rd FloorThe purpose of this session is to inspire insights on how to improve employees' experience across the talent lifecycle. Based on data from a global workforce survey and Korn Ferry's database of engagement research, we will share what attracts people to organizations, inspires them to stay, and prompts them to leave.  We will highlight findings from the education sector and discuss similarities and differences across age groups. Through small group discussions, we will guide audience members to consider how they can apply the results to their own work.
Track 3: Organizational Development

Dealing Effectively with Unique Faculty Challenges

Handouts

Recruiting Room - Ground Floor (Enter via Club Cambria Room)This session will address HR-related issues that may arise for faculty and instructional staff including tenure-track/tenured faculty, contract faculty, and P&A instructors. This interactive session will include working through various scenarios that can create challenges for chairs, heads, and HR specialists.
N/AHR Strategic Planning Indoor Club Room - 6th FloorParticipants will be prompted to add their contributions to a SOAR analysis (strengths, opportunities, aspirations, and results) of OHR's strategic plan.

Session two: 1:15 to 2:15 p.m.

TrackTopicRoomDescription
Track 1: Individual ContributorsHR Consulting in the Gray: How to Provide Strategic Advice that Leads to Sound Decisions Club Cambria Room - 3rd Floor

Many HR leaders would appreciate having a flow chart for every problem they face -- if A, then B.

Unfortunately, it is rarely that simple. An issue that seems obvious to solve at first glance can quickly turn into having to navigate in the gray abyss. Objectives for this session include: a) learning how to look beyond the first obvious answer and thinking more analytically; b) recognizing how building a strong HR foundation is critical to helping you navigate in the gray; and c) becoming a strategic HR partner that treats interactions like a partnership, not a transaction.

Track 2: Leaders and ManagersLeading Change: Why It's Not Easy and How to SucceedRecruiting Room - Ground Floor (Enter via Club Cambria Room)This session explores the challenges HR professionals face when leading change initiatives within complex, decentralized organizations like universities. It emphasizes the common resistance to change and provides evidence-based strategies to navigate these obstacles. Attendees will learn effective techniques for implementing successful change management within their colleges, campuses, or units.
Track 3: Organizational DevelopmentEmpowering Employee Career Growth: The Future of Talent Mobility at the U M Club Room - 1st FloorThis session will explore the concept of talent mobility and its practical implementation. Key points of discussion include defining talent mobility, examining the tools and practices necessary for its success, and understanding the cultural shifts required to support it, emphasizing the role of HR professionals. The session will also delve into how the Internal Talent Marketplace (ITM) will facilitate talent mobility within the IT workforce and explore how these practices can be applied to other sectors such as Finance and HR.
N/AHR Strategic Planning  Indoor Club Room - 6th FloorParticipants will be prompted to add their contributions to a SOAR analysis (strengths, opportunities, aspirations, and results) of OHR's strategic plan.

Session three: 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

TrackTopicRoomDescription
Track 1: Individual ContributorsAI: Practical Uses for HR ProfessionalsClub Cambria Room - 3rd Floor

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming how we work, and Human Resources is no exception. This session will introduce you to the basics of AI and provide practical examples of how AI can support your HR work and equip you with actionable insights to explore its implementation within your department.

Key Takeaways:
1. Understanding AI Fundamentals: Demystify the buzzwords and gain a foundational understanding of AI and its potential applications in HR.
2. AI Use Cases for HR: Explore specific examples of how AI is being used in areas like recruitment, onboarding, talent management, and employee engagement.
3. Ethical Considerations: Discuss the importance of responsible AI use and potential ethical implications in the context of HR.

Track 2: Leaders and ManagersDeveloping a Sound Compensation Strategy: Compa Ratios, Midpoints, and MoreRecruiting Room - Ground Floor (Enter via Club Cambria Room)In this presentation, you will learn how to develop a single or multi-year strategy to address your unit's or college's compensation needs using an approach that promotes equity, performance, and market competitiveness.
Track 3: Organizational DevelopmentNavigating the Matrix: Managing Change in a Decentralized Organization M Club Room - 1st FloorThe University operates as a matrixed organization, with colleges and campuses as the core business units (verticals) and management functions like IT, HR, and Finance as support services (horizontals). This structure balances decentralized decision-making within academic units with centralized coordination from management functions. However, leading and working within this matrix can be challenging. This session will address these challenges, highlight opportunities, and discuss key skills for success in this environment.
N/AHR Strategic Planning Indoor Club Room - 6th FloorParticipants will be prompted to add their contributions to a SOAR analysis (strengths, opportunities, aspirations, and results) of OHR's strategic plan.
