Supervisory Development The Supervisory Development program offers flexible, online leadership programs exclusively for faculty and staff who supervise the work of others. New Supervisor Orientation This fully online New Supervisor Orientation supports new supervisors in understanding what it means to supervise at the University of Minnesota and to build awareness about details unique to them and their direct reports.

Supervisory Foundations University leaders identified key skills for supervisors to support the institution's mission. These skills form the basis of Supervisory Development courses, available as audit, self-paced, and facilitated options. Ideal for supervisors with over six months of experience, learners include administrative associates, departmental administrators, faculty leading labs, mid-level managers, and managers of student workers.

Leading on All Levels (LOAL) Leading on All Levels is a virtual cohort offered two to three times annually. The program includes seven synchronous sessions and engagement with leadership content between sessions. Participants complete a leadership assessment. Coaches/consultants are available for consultation. Sessions focus on leadership discernment (beyond supervisory and positional), professional development, self-awareness of leadership styles, and various leadership skills, behaviors, and competencies. Participants interact with other leaders and resources through leadership panels and guest speakers.

Customized Leadership Development and Assessment The Talent Strategy Center of Expertise works with teams and individual leaders to develop programs and assessment services to support specific developmental goals and/or strategic priorities. The customized program begins with an intake process and assessment to ensure the delivery of an experience aligned with the team’s goals.
Assessments effectively gather information about faculty and staff to help make plans for the future. Faculty and staff use developmental assessments as a feedback tool for personal development, gaining the self-awareness needed to lead effectively. We administer two assessments:

External Leadership Consulting Services Since 2016, the Talent Strategy Center of Expertise (TSCoE) has been building a group of external experts with experience working in higher education who can partner with colleges and units to retain top talent through leadership coaching and development.

College LEADS The College LEADS program helps faculty build their leadership skills to address the University’s leadership challenges. Faculty members participate in activities such as panels, assessments, a capstone, and leadership coaching. Participants meet with their college cohort of other faculty members in person monthly for nine months.

Academic Department Leadership Program (ADLP) ADLP promotes leadership development for 20 academic unit leaders across the University who are in their second to fourth years in a leadership role. This academic-year program includes monthly synchronous sessions on leadership topics, and includes panels, university resources, individual assessments, leadership coaching, and facilitated small group discussions. Participants focus on how to assess their department, build a positive culture, and collaboratively lead it toward innovation and inclusive excellence.
