Am I eligible for a student job?

As a University of Minnesota student, you are eligible to work if you are enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program and you meet minimum registration requirements.

*If you worked on campus during spring semester and intend to register for fall semester, you do not need to register for summer to hold a student job.

Can work-study be used at any on-campus jobs?

Yes, all on-campus student jobs are eligible for work-study. 

Am I still eligible to work even if I don't have work-study?

Yes, you may still work on or off campus even if you do not have work-study funding.

How much will I be paid?

Wages for student jobs may vary based on where you're working but will be at least $15 per hour, systemwide. This applies whether or not your position is work-study funded.

I am an international student. Am I eligible to work?

Yes, students who hold a F-1 or J-1 visa are eligible to work on or off campus. Please see the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) website for more information.

I am a PSEO student. Am I eligible to work a student job?

High school students in the Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) program are also eligible to work on campus. See the PSEO Student Handbook for more information.

When can I start working?

Depending on your student and registration status, you may not be able to work before or after certain dates.

Semester Work-study Notes
Summer session 2023 Summer work-study cannot be used after 8/13/23 and for specified blackout dates 6/19/23–7/2/23 (work-study fiscal year). Student is 100% department funded.
Fall 2023 Fall work-study runs 8/14/23–12/31/23.
Spring 2023 If a student does not register for sufficient spring work-study credits and has earned more than half of their fall/spring award, the award will be reviewed by the Office of Student Finance. It is possible that some of the original work-study award could be withdrawn. Work-study runs 1/1/24–5/19/24.

 

What do I need to start my job?

Once hired, you must fill out the Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification and provide documents to show that you are eligible for employment on or before your first day of work for pay. (Your supervisor will send you the document to fill out after you accept the job.) View acceptable I-9 documents.
