How to Take Time Off to Vote or Serve as an Election Judge

Voting is an opportunity to make your voice heard. As the election approaches, the Office of Human Resources wants to ensure that everyone is aware of their right to participate in the upcoming election during their scheduled work hours.

Take Time Off to Vote

Paid time off to vote is provided through University policy, which allows time off to go to your polling place, vote, and return to work. This time off extends to early in-person voting or voting on Tuesday, November 5. Please request this time away in advance and coordinate your schedule with your supervisor and others to minimize potential impacts.

Take Time Off to Serve as an Election Judge

Election judges can use this same leave time. State law requires employees serving in these roles to request time away in writing and include their certification from the election appointing authority at least 20 days before election day (October 16, 2024).

Report Your Time Away Online

Both time off to vote and serve as an election judge can be submitted for approval by going to MyU:

  • Click the My Time on the left and then the Request Time Off button at the top of the next screen.
  • Go to Absence Name, select Excused Paid, and click Submit.
  • For Reason, select Voting/Election Judge. Provide the start and end date plus time used, and then click Submit to finish reporting your time.

If you have questions about using this time, please contact your campus, college, or unit’s human resources team.
