A lot of factors must align to enable a person to learn from coaching or any learning or professional development experience. Some of those factors are:
- Employee-related (e.g., self-awareness, motivation, confidence, and coachability)
- Learning-design related (e.g., relevance and quality of feedback or content, opportunity to practice and reflect, planning for the application of learning)
- Organization-related (e.g., application of learning, support from managers and peers, expectations to apply the newly acquired skills)
This guide focuses on simple steps faculty and staff supervisors can do to help their team leverage and maximize their learning experiences. The guide is not intended as a comprehensive list but as a tool to help reflect and determine what you, as a manager can do to help employees draw the greatest possible benefit from an upcoming development opportunity.
